Will Spain's new emergency lights lead to traffic fines?
The V-16 beacons are connected to the DGT in Spain, but authorities say there’s no need to panic

From January 2026, all cars in Spain will need to carry V-16 emergency lights. These compact beacons are replacing the old warning triangles that drivers used to place on the road during a breakdown or accident.
The new lights are designed to make roadside emergencies safer. Instead of having to step out of your car and walk into traffic, you simply place the flashing beacon on the roof and switch it on.
Once activated, the V-16 connects to the DGT 3.0 platform. That means the traffic authorities and emergency services are instantly alerted to your location and can respond much more quickly.
But as you might expect, this has raised some concerns.
If these lights can pinpoint your location in seconds, can they also be used to fine you? Are drivers at risk of being monitored every time they hit the road?
For now, the answer is no. The lights only send data to DGT 3.0 when you switch them on. So, unless you activate the device during a breakdown, the authorities won’t receive any information at all.
And even if you do turn it on, there’s no way for the DGT to link the light to your name or your car’s licence plate. That means the V-16 isn’t tracking your driving habits or movements in any meaningful way.
Each V-16 must meet strict requirements set by the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT). They need to be certified, compatible with DGT 3.0 and listed on the official registry of approved models.
They also need to come with at least 12 years of built-in connectivity and this service has to be included in the original purchase price.
In other words, as long as you buy an approved device, set it up properly and only use it in an emergency, the V-16 should do exactly what it’s meant to do: keep you safe on the road.
Although V-16 beacons won’t be mandatory until next year, drivers are already allowed to use them, and a last-minute rush is expected as the deadline approaches. Why not stay ahead of the crowd and grab your FlashLED SOS geolocated beacon now at TJ Electricals Euronics Camposol?
At just €49.90, it’s one of the most affordable DGT-approved options available.
