Volunteers and Council join forces to safeguard Alhama's stray cats
Funding, adoption support and a long-term strategy to keep Alhama de Murcia’s cat population healthy and under control

Alhama de Murcia has taken another step forward in animal welfare by signing its first collaboration agreement between the Town Council and a local protection group. The deal, sealed with the Engatúsate Alhama de Murcia Association, will ensure that the town’s feral cat colonies are managed ethically and that the CER method – Capture, Sterilisation and Release – is firmly established as the way forward.
The agreement formally recognises the enormous work carried out by volunteers and non-profit groups. The commitment will initially run until September 2026, with the option to extend it further.
For the first time, feral cat colonies in Alhama will be properly mapped and registered, giving the authorities a clearer picture of where help is needed most. The Council has pledged to install shelters and feeding stations, fund essential veterinary care and run awareness campaigns to encourage the public to understand and support the initiative.
A dedicated space will also be set up on the municipal website to promote responsible adoption of sociable cats.
Engatúsate, meanwhile, will take the lead on the ground. The group will continue to manage colonies day to day, rescue abandoned litters and ensure that cats who can live happily in homes are given the chance to be adopted. Their work will also extend to education, with talks and courses aimed at raising awareness across the community.
The agreement is backed by a grant of €2,000 in 2025 to help cover expenses.
