Vera is getting an AVE station: What it means for buyers

For years, the prospect of high speed rail reaching the Almería coast has been something talked about in terms of what might happen in the future. Now, that future is beginning to look considerably more concrete.

 

Work on the Murcia-Almería high speed railway has entered a crucial new phase, with electrification and track installation progressing along the route. The Spanish government said earlier this month that the project is now in its final stages, with all sections of the railway platform either completed or under construction and the focus shifting towards equipping the line for trains.

 

For property buyers, one of the most interesting parts of the project is what is happening around Vera.

 

The town is set to have its own high speed station, Vera-Almanzora, providing long distance rail services on the new Murcia-Almería corridor. The station will be built south of Vera and is specifically designed to serve the wider area, potentially making a significant difference to how easily people can reach the coast without relying on a car.

 

This is particularly significant for buyers looking at Vera, Vera Playa, Garrucha, Mojácar and the wider Almanzora area.

 

The new railway forms part of the Mediterranean Corridor and will eventually provide a direct high speed connection between Murcia and Almería. The line stretches for around 198 kilometres and is being built to accommodate trains travelling at speeds of up to 300 km/h.

 

It is a major infrastructure project, with the overall investment now exceeding €3.6 billion. According to the government, more than €2.7 billion has already been executed and the project has moved beyond simply building the railway foundations. Work is now concentrating on electrification, track, signalling and telecommunications.

 

That change is important because it means the project is becoming much more visible on the ground.

 

Adif has already contracted the electrification of the 140-kilometre Lorca-Almería section and is progressing with the installation of the overhead electrical system. Track-related work is also moving ahead, with the necessary materials secured and track installation already awarded for sections including Vera-Almería.

 

The Vera-Almanzora station is no longer simply a proposal on a planning document either. In April, the government authorised the construction contract for the new station, with an estimated value of almost €15.7 million. The station will include a main entrance hall, passenger area, ticketing and customer service facilities and parking for at least 150 vehicles.

 

For people considering buying property in the area, the attraction is fairly straightforward.

 

Vera and the surrounding towns offer a very different proposition from some of the more established parts of the Costa Blanca, but accessibility has traditionally been one of the factors buyers have had to consider. Much of the appeal of the area comes from its beaches, golf courses, climate and relatively lower property prices, but reaching it has generally meant driving from an airport or relying on road transport.

 

A high speed station changes that equation completely.

 

It would give residents and visitors another way of reaching the area and potentially make it easier for people travelling from elsewhere in Spain to get to the Almanzora coast. It could also make the area more attractive to owners who use their properties as holiday homes or rentals.

 

That does not mean buyers should assume the arrival of the AVE will automatically send property prices soaring.

 

Infrastructure can improve accessibility and increase an area's appeal, but nobody can guarantee that it will translate into a particular increase in property values. The more immediate benefit is simply that Vera and its surrounding communities will become easier to reach.

 

The timing is also worth keeping in mind.

 

There is still no firm passenger service opening date that buyers should treat as guaranteed. The government has said the construction works are expected to reach completion towards the end of 2026, after which the railway will still have to go through the necessary testing, safety authorisations and commissioning process.

 

Independent technical analyses point to around 2029, with the Lorca–Pulpí section seen as the critical path. However, there is currently no official start date.

 

What is much less open to debate is that the project has moved a long way forward.

 

For buyers considering Vera and the Almanzora coast today, that makes the railway worth paying attention to. The station is being progressed, electrification is under way and the wider high speed line is moving into its final construction stages.

 

That could make the next few years particularly interesting for an area where buyers can still find property at prices that are often lower than those found further north along the Mediterranean coast.

 

For Spainora, the key point is not that the AVE guarantees future price rises. It is that the infrastructure is becoming real, and buyers looking at Vera today have the opportunity to consider what that improved connectivity could mean for the area before passenger trains actually arrive.
