Until November 21 The One-Armed Man of Tikún, Heroes of the African War exhibition in Alhama

Photographs and memorabilia from 1860 to 1927 in the Centro Cultural of Alhama de Murcia

Spain was involved in military campaigns in Africa for a long time, between 1860 and 1927, particularly against the Riffians, a Berber group inhabiting the north-west of what is now Morocco, and many Spanish soldiers were wounded or killed during these turbulent clashes.

This year marks the centenary of the Spanish landings at the town and islands of Alhucemas (or Al-Hoceima), which still remain part of Spanish territory despite being located just a short swim off the coast of Morocco, and among those taking part in the manoeuvre was a man popularly known as “El Manco de Tikún” (The One-Armed Man of Tikún), who was from Alhama and returned home a hero. Around 1,000 of the 22,000 combatants were killed in the fighting, and this photographic exhibition, which also contains military memorabilia, is being held in his memory and also to commemorate the suffering, the pain and the glory, of his colleagues and their families.

The exhibition can be held at the Centro Cultural Plaza Viega in Alhama until 21^st November on weekdays from 9.00 to 13.30 and between 16.30 to 19.30.
