Until April 20 Semana Santa exhibition in Alhama de Murcia
Learn more about the Encuentro which takes place during the Easter Sunday procession in Alhama
The Casa de la Cultura in Alhama de Murcia is holding a seasonal exhibition illustrating through miniature models the “Encuentro de Resurrección”, which takes place on Easter Sunday and is one of the highlights of the Semana Santa processions in the town.
The different sculpted figures being paraded in the streets meet in the centre of the town and as the tomb of Jesus opens a white dove flies out into the sky: Jesus is resurrected! Following the meeting, the pasos file back to San Lázaro together accompanied by music as onlookers throw flowers and petals into their path. It’s a particularly special morning for which Alhama is justifiably famous!
Through the models on display you can learn in detail about the event and its symbolic significance, knowledge which no doubt helps you to enjoy the joyful Easter Sunday procession in the town centre!
The figures have been created by Simón García in an effort to reproduce as faithfully as possible the actual scenes which occur every Easter in Alhama.
The exhibition is open to visitors (free of charge) every weekday from 9.00 to 14.00 and on Tuesdays from 16.30 to 19.00.
