Two tragic deaths rock Spanish holiday islands as families mourn
British mum suffers heart attack in Lanzarote while another tourist found dead in Mallorca hotel room
Heartbreak has struck two British families after separate tragedies on Spanish holiday islands within days of each other.A 46-year-old Scottish woman has died after suffering a heart attack shortly after arriving in Lanzarote for a family holiday. Mandi Murray, from Glasgow, had been on the island for just one day when she suffered the medical emergency on Thursday May 28.
Her family said she passed away peacefully following the heart attack. The tragedy has prompted an outpouring of support from friends, relatives and members of the local community.
One of Mandi's daughters has launched a GoFundMe appeal to help support her father, Derek, during what the family has described as an extremely difficult time. Within hours of the fundraising page being launched, more than £1,780 had been donated. The total is now over £5,000.
Mandi's son, Steven, paid tribute to his mother on social media, describing her as both one of his greatest critics and one of his closest friends.
"Today, I woke up thinking about my mum and realised that she wasn't just my biggest critic – she was also one of my best friends," he said.
"She was a family woman through and through and would have gone to the ends of the earth for the people she loved. She was a friend to many and was known for being incredibly outspoken – which is probably the biggest understatement I'll ever make."
Steven added: "Some of my favourite memories are the nights we spent sitting chatting, laughing and putting the world to rights until three in the morning. Then, the minute I said I was heading to my bed, I'd be called a lightweight."
The 46-year-old, who worked as a door steward at The Ferry music venue in Glasgow, was a devoted supporter of Celtic FC and Scotland. Tributes have poured in from friends and family devastated by the news.
Separate tragedy in Mallorca
In a different incident, a 30-year-old tourist was found dead in a hotel room by her heartbroken husband just one day into their beachside holiday in Mallorca.
The body was discovered on Sunday - just hours after the young couple had been out partying. They had arrived in Mallorca just a day earlier and checked into the JS Palma Stay Hotel in the popular resort of Can Pastilla.
The next morning the grief-stricken husband found his wife dead. He immediately called emergency services and medical workers rushed to the scene.
The name and nationality of the deceased has not yet been made public. The widower insisted that though they had been out the night before, they had not consumed enough alcohol to cause such a tragic outcome.
Doctors have not yet been able to establish exactly how the woman died but her body showed no obvious signs of violence. Though police believe she died of natural causes, the Homicide Group has launched an investigation due to her young age and unclear cause of death.
No hypothesis has been ruled out as police await the results of the autopsy.
