Two autumn getaways in Spain: Sunshine, culture and flavour to warm your soul
Explore the historic beauty and culinary delights of Córdoba alongside Bilbao’s vibrant culture and world-class gastronomy
As autumn brings grey skies and cooler weather to Northern Europe, many look south for sunshine and warmth. A destination, in the heart of Andalucía, now receiving attention for its favourable climate is Córdoba. Known as one of the sunniest cities in Europe, Córdoba basks in an average of 268.2 hours of sunshine each month. October temperatures here can reach a pleasant 27°C, with November remaining mild in the low twenties. This historic city, once the capital of the Nasrid Empire during the Islamic Golden Age of the 10th century, offers a wealth of architectural treasures from that era. Visitors wander the cobbled streets of the old town, marvelling at iconic landmarks such as the Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba; a breathtaking monument that beautifully melds its Islamic past with Christian influences following its conversion to a cathedral in the 13th century.
The city’s La Judería or Jewish quarter beckons too, where a 14th-century synagogue offers glimpses into a time when Muslims, Jews, and Christians coexisted in harmony. Another distinctive aspect of Córdoba is its ancient courtyards, many dating back to Roman and Arab times, which serve as cool sanctuaries decorated with flowers, lush plants, and tranquil fountains.
Córdoba’s appeal extends beyond history and climate to its gastronomy. Among local favourites are salmorejo cordobés, a refreshing chilled tomato soup laced with olive oil and garlic, and the hearty rabo de toro, a traditional oxtail stew deeply rooted in the city’s culinary heritage.
Further north, Bilbao emerges as a popular winter getaway rich in culture and cuisine. Known as a “gastronomic paradise,” the city offers delights such as buttery pastries from Pastelería Arrese, coffee and txakoli wine at Café Iruña, and inventive seafood dishes, including grilled kokotxas and Iberian pork shoulder paired with passion fruit.
Bilbao’s cultural treasures feature prominently, with the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao and its famous outdoor sculptures, including Jeff Koons’s enormous floral dog, Puppy, making the city a must-visit for art lovers. Both Córdoba and Bilbao represent enticing alternatives for English-speaking visitors based in Spain seeking sunshine, heritage, fine food, and rich cultural experiences this autumn and winter.
