Two Vega Baja Mediterranean Trail routes shortlisted for prestigious Certified Trail Award
The spectacular routes between Guardamar and Pilar de la Horadada pass through 30 points of interest along the coast

Two stages of the GR 92 'Mediterranean Trail' that run along the entire coast of the Vega Baja del Segura have been shortlisted for the 2025 Approved Trails Awards of the Valencian Community.
The awards, promoted by the Valencian Community Mountain and Climbing Sports Federation (FEMECV) in collaboration with the Valencian Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FVMP), aim to highlight the work behind each signage and maintenance project and recognise the social, sporting and cultural function that approved trails fulfil as a tool for sustainable development.
The two finalist routes in the Vega Baja region are part of the Long-Distance Trail 92, which connects the entire Mediterranean coast from the French border to the south of Spain. They are also the only officially recognised routes along this trail in the Valencian Community.
Stage 21 is approximately 27 kilometres long and runs between Guardamar del Segura and Torrevieja.
Stage 22 is 22 kilometres long and connects the towns of Torrevieja, Orihuela and Pilar de la Horadada.
Both routes pass through around 30 points of interest, offering unique landscapes with endless beaches, small cliffs, crystal-clear waters, natural areas and rich historical and cultural heritage.
The cliff walk that passes through Cabo Roig has only recently been reincorporated into the GR 92 trail after a short section of the pedestrian path had been blocked off since 2021 over a dispute between Orihuela City Council and residents of the Bellavista urbanisation about who owned the path.
The two stages are competing against five other trails that have also been selected as finalists for their quality and relevance, including the PR-CV 470 Sendero de la Cruz – Abrigo del Tarragón (Valencia), the PR-CV 24 Quatretondeta – Pla de la Casa (Alicante), the PR-CV 172 Senda del Molló (Valencia), the SL-CV 39 Senda de l'Escaló (Valencia) and the PR-CV 7 Bèrnia (Alicante).
Voting closed on January 10, 2026 and the final result will be announced during the FEMECV Awards Gala on January 30.
