This monument outside the front of the Town Hall in Los Alcázares is a recent addition to the urban landscape which was added in 2020 in recognition of the efforts of thousands of people who selflessly flocked to the town to help with the clear-up operation after the disastrous flooding of December 2016 and September 2019.
The entire town centre was engulfed by floodwater and mud, and the lives of thousands of families were thrown off course by some of the heaviest rain seen in the whole of Spain in living memory, and while emergency services and the armed forces led rescue and recovery operations their efforts were supplemented to an incalculable degree by coachloads of volunteers, armed only with wellington boots, gloves, shovels, buckets and an endless desire to help others.
The monolith was created by Manuel Pérez Álvarez and was unveiled in September 2020 and stands as reminder of the number of “good people” who came to the aid of Los Alcázares in a time of horrendous adversity.
