Two of the new Consum supermarkets are heading to Murcia’s biggest cities – one in Murcia itself and another in Cartagena. Both should be up and running by the end of the year. But the real news is that there's a third store in Caravaca de La Cruz that's opening way sooner: this Thursday June 19 in fact.
This Caravaca store has quite a story behind it. It's actually one of nine locations that Consum picked up last year from a Valencian company called Kuups Design International, which used to run them under the Economy Cash brand. Now they're getting a fresh start with the Consum name and look.
The new Caravaca supermarket, located at 5 Avenida de los Andenes, will boast more than 1,400 square metres of shopping space, 84 parking spots for customers and three electric vehicle charging stations.
This will actually be Consum's second store in Caravaca de la Cruz. They already have one on Avenida de Juan Carlos I in the town centre, so shoppers will have even more options now.
One thing Consum prides itself on is treating its workforce well and, true to form, the Valencian chain has incorporated the entire staff team from Kuups, meaning that 35 workers from Caravaca and neighbouring towns have kept their jobs.
Once this Caravaca store opens on June 19, Consum will have 52 locations across the Region of Murcia, including 31 regular Consum supermarkets plus 21 Charter franchise stores. But they're not stopping there. With those two additional stores coming to Murcia and Cartagena, they'll hit 54 total.
The Murcia store is going up on Avenida San Javier, right between the Beniaján and Torreagüera neighbourhoods. It'll be similar in size to the Caravaca one at 1,400 square metres, with nearly 80 parking spaces.
The Cartagena location will be right in the heart of the city on Calle Santiago Ramón y Cajal. It's going to be a bit more compact at just over 1,000 square metres with about 20 parking spots, but that makes sense for a city centre location.
