The Sierra de Mojantes in Caravaca de la Cruz
Fabulous views from the highest point of the Caravaca countryside
The Sierra de Mojantes mountain range includes the highest point in the municipality of Caravaca de la Cruz at 1,615 metres above sea level, and an area of 1483 hectares is protected by ZEPA birdlife protection regulations due mainly to the presence of griffon vultures (Gyps fulvus).
The woodland consists of holm oaks, pine, juniper and maple trees, and apart from the griffon vultures there are also peregrine falcons, owls, screech owls and goats.
The mountains are accessible from the road between Caravaca de la Cruz and Puebla de Don Fadrique in Andalucía (the RM-730), west of the village of Barranda, and the recommended climb rises 613 metres over a distance of 3.8 kilometres. Hikers are advised to set aside at least four hours for the ascent and descent, and those making the effort are rewarded with panoramic views over the surrounding countryside to the distant mountains of Murcia Almería and Granada.
Further information about Caravaca is available from the tourist office (Plaza de España, 7, telephone 968 702424, email turismo@caravacadelacruz.es).
