Spain's Sturgeon Supermoon: A celestial showstopper this August
Spanish skies are set to light up with August’s rare and radiant Supermoon

Spain is gearing up for an incredible couple of years when it will have a front-row seat and one of the best views in the world of a spectacular trio of eclipses. But before this, August is preparing to dazzle with its traditional summer spectacles: the Perseids, Delta Aquariids, Pegasids and, of course, the magical Sturgeon Supermoon.
The August Supermoon will grace the Spanish skies in all its glory on Saturday August 9.
Why is it called the Sturgeon Supermoon?
NASA coined the term “supermoon” to describe a full moon that happens when the Moon is at its closest point to Earth. It’s bigger, it’s brighter and frankly, it’s breathtaking. But this one also carries a name with ancient roots.
The August full moon is traditionally called the “Sturgeon Moon,” a name passed down from Native American peoples who noticed that this was the time of year sturgeon fish were easiest to catch in the Great Lakes.
These giant prehistoric fish swim their way into legend every summer, just like the moon that bears their name.
When and where to watch it in Spain
The Sturgeon Supermoon will reach its peak illumination on Saturday August 9 at 09:55 CET (07:55 UTC). Because this full moon coincides with the Moon’s closest point to Earth, it will appear about 7% larger and 15% brighter than usual.
As an added bonus, summer’s warm and dusty atmosphere will tint the moon with a soft reddish-orange glow, a fiery filter that adds even more magic to the night. The Moon will appear especially large as it rises and sets, so early morning and just after sunset are ideal times to enjoy it.
If you want to really soak it in, find a spot away from city lights. Spain’s beaches, countryside or any elevated area will give you the best view of the show.
