Madrid has launched Spain's only direct flight to South Africa, restoring a long-distance air connection that disappeared six years ago and opening up easier access to one of Africa's most popular travel destinations.

 

The new route links Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport with Johannesburg, South Africa's largest city and one of the continent's busiest transport hubs. Operated by Air Europa, the service began on June 24 and will run three times a week.

 

Until now, travellers flying between Spain and South Africa generally had to connect through other European or Middle Eastern airports after direct services between the two countries were suspended in 2019.

 

The new connection is expected to appeal to holidaymakers, business travellers and passengers continuing on to other destinations across southern Africa. Johannesburg serves as a major gateway for countries including Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe, as well as South Africa's own tourist hotspots.

 

For visitors heading to South Africa, the route offers direct access to attractions ranging from the wildlife of Kruger National Park and the beaches of the Garden Route to Cape Town's famous Table Mountain and vibrant cultural scene.

 

Flights depart Madrid every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 11.45pm, arriving in Johannesburg at 9.50am local time the following morning. Return flights leave Johannesburg on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays at 6.55pm, landing in Madrid at 5.05am the next day.

 

Journey times are just over 10 hours in each direction.

 

Air Europa is operating the route using its Boeing 787 Dreamliner fleet. The airline says the aircraft is one of the most efficient in its category, reducing fuel consumption and emissions by up to 25% compared with older models.

 

Passengers will also benefit from larger windows, a quieter cabin and an advanced air circulation system designed to improve comfort on long-haul flights. Business Class travellers will have access to fully flat beds measuring up to two metres in length, along with an onboard dining service created by Michelin-starred chef Martín Berasategui.
