Smart cameras are coming to Los Alcázares beaches and high-traffic areas this summer
The €3.15 million EU-funded project will give the town real-time monitoring of its coastline, bike lanes and main roads

Los Alcázares is about to get a comprehensive network of smart cameras covering its beaches, seafront promenades, bike lanes and main access roads, with the town council currently preparing to roll out the system ahead of the busiest months of the summer season.
The project forms part of the Destination Tourism Sustainability Plan 'Los Alcázares: The Most Sustainable Mar Menor', funded through the EU's Next Generation programme, with a total investment of €3.15 million across the Region of Murcia's territorial tourism sustainability plans.
The system will be based on AI-powered video surveillance cameras capable of providing real-time images and generating data on traffic flow and the movement of people and vehicles.
Planned features include detecting traffic congestion, supporting traffic management and coordinating directly with the Local Police, Guardia Civil and emergency services. A centralised municipal platform will allow cameras to be monitored, recordings managed and incidents tracked in real time.
Cameras will be installed at strategic locations including town entrances, beaches, seafront promenades, bike lanes and high-traffic roads, although the final locations have yet to be announced.Where possible, equipment will be powered by stand-alone solar kits, with connections to the municipal power grid as an alternative where more practical. The system will also include 4G and 5G backup connectivity to keep things running if the primary connection goes down.
The town council has pointed out that the infrastructure will help manage the significant influx of visitors the Mar Menor area receives during peak season, improving the town's ability to respond quickly to incidents and coordinate municipal services when the pressure is at its highest.
