September 28 Open day at the prehistoric rock art of Monte Arabí in Yecla
See paintings from the Bronze Age at this UNESCO World Heritage Site at the mystical mountain of Yecla
The 23rd edition of the Open Days season in Yecla continues on 28th September with a visit to the prehistoric rock art and cave paintings at Monte Arabí, the “mystical mountain” in the north of the municipality.
These paintings are included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Prehistoric Rock Art of Mediterranean Spain, and have also been awarded the status of Monument of Natural Interest in the Region of Murcia and Item of Cultural Interest.
Monte Arabí contains Stone Age and Bronze Age sites as well as various rock shelters at altitudes of over 1,000 metres above sea level, and in the two Cantos de Visera sites we can see numerous quadrupeds and highly realistic human figures. On the other hand, in the Abrigo del Mediodía, we find more Schematic art showing human figures, some with their arms folded and others with individual characteristics.
The timetable of the open day is from 10.00 to 13.30, with groups of 25 people at most being filled on a first come first served basis. Visits begin at 30-minute intervals and further information and registration are available by telephone on 968 700901 (weekdays 9.30 to 13.00).
Further visits to other sites are being held on 21st and 28th September.
More visiting information is available from the tourist office of Yecla (email turismo@yecla.es) or, for more local events, news and visiting information in English, go to the home page of Yecla Today.
