San Pedro del Pinatar works towards 'universal accessibility' throughout the town

The local council continues work on accessibility across the town, as well as other projects such as bike lane upgrades and removal of overhead wiring

The town council of San Pedro del Pinatar is continuing its push to make the area more accessible and modern, with new improvements planned for streets, beaches, public buildings and transport services.

Accessibility councillor Valentín Henarejos recently met with the president of FAMDIF (the regional federation representing people with physical disabilities), Carmen Gil, along with the organisation’s architect, to review the work already carried out over the past year and outline the next phase of projects.

The council says it is working towards 'universal accessibility' across the municipality. Recent improvements include the removal of barriers in the town that make it harder for people to get around, the installation of new dropped kerbs to improve pedestrian access, and the removal of utility poles that obstructed paths and walkways.

Particular attention is being given to areas such as the surroundings of the local health centre and the beaches, where measures have been introduced to improve access for people with reduced mobility. The number of adapted parking spaces has also been increased.

In public transport, the council confirmed plans for a new bus stop to serve disability organisations operating in the municipality.

A new agreement is also being prepared so FAMDIF can continue advising the council on its upcoming Municipal Accessibility Plan. And they are already working on more accessibility measures that will be put in place ahead of the busy summer season.

Alongside the accessibility works, San Pedro del Pinatar is also moving forward with improvements to bike lanes along the La Puntica and Villananitos seafront promenades. The plan is to 'renaturalise' them by adding more plants, which will hopefully also create more of a distinction between the path and the bike lanes.

 Other approved projects include the installation of air conditioning in 15 classrooms in local schools and two new tourist offices.

The municipality has also launched a major plan to remove overhead cables and utility poles from public streets. Work has already begun with the removal of three poles on the La Puntica seafront promenade as part of a gradual project that will eventually eliminate more than 118,000 metres of overhead cabling across different parts of the town.

According to the council, the projects will reduce visual clutter and modernise the town, all while improving accessibility.
