San Pedro del Pinatar residents to get 11% discount on water bills after supply crisis
Ayuntamiento moves to compensate households for 10 days without safe drinking water
San Pedro del Pinatar residents will see an 11% discount on their next water bill, following the approval of a compensation measure by the Ayuntamiento after 10 days without potable water last October. The decision was agreed during January’s plenary session, held on Thursday January 15, and received support from PP, Vox, PSOE, and the non-affiliated councillors, with AISP abstaining. The move comes in response to the incident between October 12 and 21 2025, when a breakdown in the Taibilla Canals Association system, caused by DANA Alice, led to a major water supply problem that left several municipalities, including San Pedro del Pinatar, without safe drinking water.
Municipal reports concluded that during the period when the water was not fit for consumption, “the taxable event that justifies the collection of fees did not occur.” This means the measure is not a voluntary discount, but a legal adjustment made in line with local finance regulations.
Residents will benefit from an 11% reduction on both consumption fees and fixed charges for the upcoming quarter. Councillor for Industrial Services and Government Spokesperson explained that “this percentage responds to a strictly proportional and objective criterion; such as the 10 days in which the water was not potable out of a period of 90 days that makes up a billing quarter.”
He added that implementing the discount represents a total cost of 132,000 euros, with only 40,602 euros covered by the Taibilla Canals Association, despite it being “the body directly responsible for the incident.” The Ayuntamiento will absorb the remaining cost.
“The government team has always acted with the clear objective of protecting the residents and ensuring that they do not bear the cost of a service that was not provided,” he stated, also calling on the Taibilla Canals Association and the Ministry for Ecological Transition to take responsibility for compensating those affected.
Mayor Pedro Javier Sánchez reaffirmed the Ayuntamiento’s commitment to local residents, saying, “We have acted swiftly and rigorously to ensure they do not pay for a service they did not receive properly, even though the cause was not municipal. And we will continue to demand accountability and greater involvement from those responsible.”
