San Javier turns Vereda del Vinco into flood-resilient public space
The flood-prone area will be protected during bad weather and used for open-air entertainment when it’s dry

The Vereda del Vinco in San Javier, constantly deluged during stormy weather, has been transformed into a flood-friendly area that will help manage rainwater and serve as an open-air public leisure space when dry.
The €550,000 project, which was only announced at the end of February, is now nearly complete. It was co-financed by the regional government, which contributed €350,000, and the San Javier Town Council, which provided the remaining €200,000.
The project includes building a gently curving, floodable path that acts as a filtration ditch. During heavy rain, the ditch will carry and filter water into the ground. In dry weather, it will function as a public space.
The system includes several filtration ponds that can double as sandpits or outdoor play areas for families.
Special drainage pavements have been installed at street crossings to help rainwater soak into the ground naturally. Ramps and stairs that connect both sides of the sidewalk use gabions, which improve surface drainage and accessibility.
During a visit to Vereda del Vinco last week, Mayor José Miguel Luengo said that "this is a long-awaited project with which we fulfill a commitment from the municipal government, which evacuates and drains water, as well as improving the bridge that connects both banks, replacing the concrete pipes with frames that have a greater capacity to evacuate water."
He stressed "its contribution to environmental preservation and the creation of a new, green, friendly environment for citizens to enjoy."
Mayor Luengo also thanked the regional government and pointed out that €25 million has been invested in San Javier over the past 10 years "to protect us from torrential rains."
