San Javier plans shaded public retreats for sweltering La Manga summers
Pergolas, new trees and cooler paving are all part of a European-funded plan to make La Manga more liveable in the heat

San Javier Town Council has announced plans to create new shaded seating areas of La Manga del Mar Menor, with the aim of making the area more comfortable during the sweltering summer months and giving some of its unused urban spaces a much-needed purpose.
The project will focus on land around the municipal sports centre and various spots across La Manga's urban area, transforming currently neglected plots into proper public spaces with pergolas, additional tree planting and specially designed paving that helps reduce heat build-up.
The idea is to tackle the urban heat island effect, the phenomenon where densely built-up areas trap heat and push temperatures even higher than the surrounding countryside, which is a very real issue in a place like La Manga where summer tourism puts enormous pressure on the available space.
The council has pointed to growing demand from both residents and visitors for more comfortable outdoor spaces that are actually usable during the hottest parts of the year.
The project is being funded through European Next Generation EU money as part of the wider Territorial Plan for Sustainable Tourism in the Region of Murcia.
Work will involve planting species suited to the local climate and improving the overall look and feel of the affected areas, with the long-term goal of making La Manga a more pleasant place to spend time throughout the year.
