San Javier moves ahead with new bike lanes as cycling network continues to grow
Two new sections will link key routes in San Javier and Santiago de la Ribera as part of a wider push for sustainable mobility
The Ayuntamiento de San Javier is pressing ahead with further improvements to its cycling infrastructure, with plans now in place for two new sections of bike lane within the municipality. The work will be carried out by construction company González Soto and will focus on Avenida Pinatar and the RM-F34 road between Santiago de la Ribera and the roundabout at the old airport access. The project forms part of the ayuntamiento’s long-term approach to sustainable transport. According to the tender documents, the aim is to “plan, coherently and continuously over time, the various programmes and measures geared towards achieving sustainable and efficient solutions for the mobility of its residents”. Special emphasis is placed on “soft modes of transport, such as bicycles or personal mobility vehicles”.
The total cost of the works is €548,251, with an expected execution period of four months.
One of the most significant elements is the new cycle lane along Avenida Pinatar. This section will begin at the edge of San Javier town centre, at the junction with Calle Jabalina, and run along the right-hand side of the road towards the La Paloma roundabout on the SJ-77. From there, it will continue towards the roundabout leading to the Dos Mares shopping centre. The stretch between these two roundabouts currently has no bike lane, but the planned works will fill that gap and create a continuous route of around 2.5 kilometres. Once completed, it will also provide a connection with the neighbouring municipality of San Pedro del Pinatar.
The ayuntamiento says the new project builds on a series of recently completed improvements. These include the new bike lane linking Avenida Monasterio de Las Palmas with the Municipal Sports Centre, as well as the refurbishment of the route connecting San Javier town centre with the Santiago de la Ribera seafront (April 2024 article). Together, these projects are described as clear evidence of the ayuntamiento’s commitment to modernising, maintaining and expanding its cycling network.
The current plans were drawn up at the request of the ayuntamiento’s Sports and Public Services departments and are linked to an application for funding available to local authorities under a ministerial aid programme approved in November 2022.
All the planned sections run entirely within the municipality of San Javier, covering both San Javier itself and Santiago de la Ribera, and mark another step in the steady expansion of cycling routes across the area.
