San Javier launches year-round beach cleaning service to keep its coastline in top shape
The service will cover around 400 bins and include night shifts in La Manga during peak summer months

San Javier town council has launched a new beach cleaning service designed to keep its coastline in good condition throughout the year, covering both the beaches of Santiago de la Ribera (La Hita, Barnuevo, Colón and Castillico) and the full length of La Manga del Mar Menor on both its Mediterranean and inland sides, including areas such as El Pedrucho, Veneziola, Mistral or El Estacio, among others.
The service is intended to complement existing municipal resources rather than replace them, focusing specifically on the kind of work that standard beach cleaning machinery can't handle. That includes removing biomass debris and seagrass, clearing waste from hard-to-reach areas, regularly emptying the roughly 400 litter bins along the coastline and cleaning access points, walkways, footbaths and street furniture.
Toilets, Civil Protection posts and lifeguard booths will also be included in the cleaning schedule.
The operation will scale up and down depending on the time of year and how busy the beaches are. During the summer months, additional staff and equipment will be brought in, including night shifts in La Manga running from midnight to 7am to ensure the beaches are clean and ready before the first visitors arrive each morning.
At peak times, up to eight operators may be deployed across the area, while in winter the service will continue at a reduced level adapted to demand.
The service is also designed to be flexible enough to respond quickly to storms, heavy rain or unexpected spikes in visitor numbers.
