Roman architectural finding in Jumilla from almost 2,000 years ago
The discovery ties in with the theory of a funereal and burial complex in Jumilla in the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD
Further evidence of the presence of the Romans in Jumilla almost 2,000 years ago has been unearthed at the site of El Pedregal, where a limestone block which has been unearthed has been identified as a capital (the block of stone which sites atop a pillar, providing support for a roof, arches and other structures).
Estefanía Gandía, the municipal archaeologist of Jumilla, has identified the block as dating from the 2nd or 3rd century AD and is confident that it belonged to a funereal temple od which a cornice is housed in the Jerónimo Molina municipal archaeological museum.
The capital was discovered quite by chance when ground was being cleared for the installation of fairground attractions during the August fiestas, and it was Srta Gandía herself who travelled to inspect it and identify it. She asserts that this is further evidence of a Roman funeral and burial complex in Jumilla, of which El Casón is the most easily visible remnant.
