Road between Mazarrón and the Port to be widened to two lanes
Plans for the first 3.7 kilometres of the new dual carriageway project are going on public display this week as part of a major investment to improve road access

A long-awaited project to upgrade and widen the RM-332 regional road between Mazarrón and Puerto de Mazarrón is moving forward this week with the public exhibition of plans for the first phase.
The improvements aim to relieve congestion on what is one of the busiest routes in the Region of Murcia, particularly during the summer months.
The planned dual carriageway will begin at the Red Cross roundabout in Mazarrón and go for 3.7 kilometres to the roundabout of the Phoenician ships in the Port of Mazarrón. This stretch, which handles the highest volume of traffic, is considered the most urgent.
According to the proposed layout, the works have an estimated tender budget of €27.5 million, not including an additional €2.5 million earmarked for land expropriations on either side of the existing single-lane road.
The final cost is expected to rise as future sections are developed, with the entire 9.6-kilometre route projected to exceed €60 million by the time it reaches the Alamillo beach roundabout.
The road currently handles more than 16,000 vehicles per day on average, a figure that rises above 20,000 in summer. The high density of businesses and multiple access points along the route only add to the traffic.
The new dual carriageway will have two lanes in each direction, alongside service roads, cycle lanes, a new roundabout and three drainage structures, all designed to accommodate a maximum speed of 80kmh.
This section of the RM-332 is a critical artery for residents, businesses and visitors alike, with over six million vehicle movements recorded annually.
The regional Ministry for Development and Infrastructures says this modernisation will mark a “qualitative leap” in connectivity, improving both local and regional access to the Bay of Mazarrón.
In addition to easing traffic, the works are expected to enhance road safety, stimulate tourism and encourage economic development throughout the coastal municipality.
The deadline for public feedback on the first section is expected to close in mid-September.
