Restoration continues to progress well at the Teatro Guerra in Lorca
The historic theatre in the centre of Lorca will once again be the oldest theatre in use in Murcia when it reopens
Restoration work is still ongoing at the historic Teatro Guerra in Lorca but another step forward has been made with the imminent beginning of the renovation of the distinctive façade, one of the most striking features of the building which was designed in 1861.
The contract was awarded for precisely 267,379 euros, according to the Town Hall, and the work will take place in two phases, the first in Calle Doctor Arcas Meca and on the main façade in Plaza Calderón de la Barca, before moving on in mid-December to Calle Príncipe Alfonso and Calle Poeta Carlos Mellado.
Inside the building various plasterwork, plumbing and electrical installations have already been replaced, and new sound and air conditioning systems installed, while some seats have required repairs and other work has been necessary since the start of the summer.
In the meantime, although the main theatre in the city centre is temporarily out of action, Lorca still boasts another top class venue in the far newer Auditorio Margarita Lozano, enabling the busy local cultural life to continue uninterrupted.
For more local information about Lorca, including news and what’s on, enquire at the tourist office (located in the same building, telephone 968 441914, email lorcaturismo@lorca.es), or visit the home page of Lorca Today.
