Restoration and repairs begin at the Casa de la Cultura in Caravaca
The Casa de la Cultura Emilio Sáez in Caravaca dates from 1581
The Town Hall of Caravaca de la Cruz continues to invest in the restoration of elements of its historical and cultural heritage and the latest project to begin is that of repairs to the roof, façade and stairway at the Casa de la Cultura “Emilio Sáez”.
The main objective of the 40,000-euro designation of funds is to prevent the leaks and damp which currently affect the historic building, and further plans in the pipeline include work on the roofs of the Casa de la Cruz and the Palacete de los Uribe, with a total investment of around 150,000 euros.
The Casa de la Cultura, apart from being a building of historical interest, is widely used by both council staff and members of the public in Caravaca, housing the municipal library and other facilities, but as well as structural improvements the project also includes a re-painting of the façade and the restoration of the stone doorway with its heraldic coat of arms and wooden door.
The Casa de la Cultura was originally built in 1581 to house the Hospicio de los Jerónimos, a purpose which it fulfilled until the spate of confiscations of ecclesiastical institutions led to its passing into private ownership in 1835. It was not acquired by the Town Hall until 1994, after which it was adapted for its current use.
