Quick action from emergency crews has stopped an agricultural fire that broke out on Thursday afternoon near Castellar Castle in the El Llano de Bullas area, Bullas, from reaching nearby homes.

 

The Region of Murcia's 112 Emergency Coordination Centre began receiving calls about the fire at around 6.30pm, with witnesses reporting that it was dangerously close to houses and at risk of spreading into a wooded area.

 

Firefighters from the Region of Murcia's Fire and Rescue Consortium (CEIS), based in Caravaca, were sent to the scene along with environmental agents from the Mula office of the General Directorate of Environment, forest brigades from Mula and Cehegín, the Mula rapid intervention brigade from the region's Forest Fire Defense Unit (UDIF), Forest Environment Surveillance staff, a coordination and surveillance aircraft (ACOVI), and a helicopter from the General Directorate of Citizen Security and Emergencies.

 

Crews worked hard to stop the flames advancing towards nearby buildings and woodland, eventually bringing the fire under control. It was fully extinguished after burning through 500 square metres of forest and 1.1 hectares of agricultural land.

 

It's shaping up to be a particularly tough year for wildfires across Spain as a whole. More than 262,000 hectares have already been affected by fires since the start of the year, according to provisional figures up to August 20, with 43 major fires, those affecting more than 500 hectares, recorded across the country so far in 2026.

 

While these numbers remain below last year's exceptionally high levels, the scale of this year's fires is still a cause for concern as Spain continues through its peak wildfire season.
