Preliminary research under way for the restoration of parts of Jumilla castle
The castle of Jumilla was built in the 15th century by the Marquis of Villena
The Town Hall of Jumilla has begun work on the latest archaeological dig at the castle above the town, the first step in a process which has been designed to help preserve and recover this most outstanding part of the town’s historical, cultural and architectural heritage.
At the same time, while the investigation is under way work is going ahead on the adjudication of the contract to draw up the technical project, all of this prior to actually beginning work in this difficult terrain.
The current excavations are taking place alongside various parts of the walled fortress, both inside and outside the castle complex. Documentation is being gathered concerning the structures which remain hidden below ground, the way in which the castle grew over time and of course how best to approach restoration work in the future.
As Mayoress Seve González says, the overall aim in this project is to improve the condition of the castle, guarantee its solidity and permanence and make it as easy as possible for visitors to enjoy their trip to one of the best vantage points from which to admire the expanse of surrounding countryside and mountains.
Another aspect of the work envisaged is the recovery of the old church of Santa María de Gracia.
