Phase 4 of Cartagena's new look waterfront moves ahead

Work on the Paseo de la Marina prepares to start as fourteen companies have submitted bids for the €7.2 million contract

Cartagena is taking the next step in its project to redevelop the waterfront. Phase 4 focuses on the Paseo de la Marina, the wide promenade that links the city with the cruise terminal. This stage of the project is about getting the work ready to start, with construction companies submitting their bids for the contract.

The redevelopment plans hope to make the paseo nicer and more functional at the same time. The work will include green areas, shaded spots, benches and a water feature with lights. Pergolas covered in plants will be added, and the height of the paseo will be lowered to improve views of the Muralla de Carlos III and the city from the port.

A new building around 90 metres long will also be constructed. It will have a roof garden for shade, five shops, accessible toilets, technical spaces and a small visitor centre with information about the port's history and culture.

The project is part of a larger plan to connect the city with its port and make the waterfront a place where people can spend time, rather than just pass through. The redeveloped paseo will be a space to walk, relax, meet friends, and enjoy the sea views. For tourists arriving on the many cruise ships that call at the port, it will provide handy services, shaded areas and information points about the city and the port.

With Phase 4 now in motion and the bidding complete, Cartagena's waterfront is one step closer to becoming greener, more accessible and better integrated into city life.
