One person has died and three others have been injured after an explosion and subsequent fire tore through a café on Calle Alfarerías in Almería on Wednesday afternoon, April 1.

 

The 112 emergency coordination centre in Andalucía received the first call at 5.20pm reporting at least four casualties, one of them in a serious condition. Firefighters, bomb disposal experts from the National Police, local police and paramedics from the 061 emergency medical service were all dispatched to the scene within minutes.

 

The exact cause of the explosion is still under investigation, although initial findings at the scene suggest a gas cylinder may have been responsible. A large security perimeter has been established around the area while emergency crews continue their work at the site.

 

María del Mar García Lorca, Almería City Council's delegate for traffic, public safety and emergencies, attended the scene in person to oversee the operation.
