November 25 International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women in Yecla
The day will be marked by a programme of activities planned by the Council
Patricia Soriano, the councillor for equality and women in
Yecla, has presented a programme for November to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women on Monday November 25.
Since 2003, 1,274 women have been murdered in Spain at the hands of their partners or ex-partners. This year alone 40 women have been murdered as a result of domestic violence. Furthermore, since 2013 there have have been 61 victims of murder that have been minors.
Many political figures and parties are working together to stop the violence that women are facing in Spain at the hands of their partners. The worrying number of victims has prompted many government officials to take action in recent years.
The department of Equality and Women in Yecla has therefore taken it upon themselves to do everything they can to protect and help victims effected by violence.
The department has already started this month with a self-defence workshop which has run throughout November. The classes seek to empower women and teach them the necessary skills to deal with possible attackers.
Furthermore, the program included a talk on violence against women which was held by CAVI professionals a the IMAS Senior Citizens centre.
On Thursday November 28 a workshop entitled “Debunking myths. Good treatment and healthy relationships” led by Sole Puche will be held at the IMAS Senior Citizens Centre at 4.30pm.
On Monday November 25, the Institutional pledge will be read by the Mayor of Yecla, Remedios Lajara, at 11am in the Plaza Mayor. That afternoon at 7.30pm, in the Municipal Auditorium Juan Miguel Benedito Rodríguez, there will be a presentation and screening of the short film “Solo un ensayo” (Just an essay) produced by Yecla natives Samuel Quiles and Claudio Cerdán, which is nominated for the Goya Awards.
Further workshops are scheduled after the screening of the film, and on Friday November 29, from 4.30pm to 5.30pm, awareness raising activities for younger people are being held at the Afedeco headquarters.
Similar awareness raising activities related to violence against women will take place from 6pm to 8pm on Calle San Francisco, and will be held by the Red Cross youth organisation.
Councillor Patricia Soriano stressed that the activities organised to raise awareness of November 25 “are only part of an intense agenda of activities that has been carried out in recent years. With a base of education, we can achieve good prevention, so we will continue to carry out workshops and awareness-raising activities in educational centres.”
