November 23 Free guided tour in Spanish of El Berro in Sierra Espuña
The village is a hub for rural tourism in the mountains of Alhama de Murcia
This tour of the village of El Berro, in the foothills of Sierra Espuña, is a new addition to the schedule of guided visits in Alhama de Murcia this autumn and begins at 10.00 in the car park of the Sierra Espuña campsite (click for map) on the edge of the village.
Although the village might not be “quaint”, it boasts some charming little corners and streets and of course enjoys great views and clean mountain air. In addition, you can bank on receiving a warm welcome at the local bars and restaurants, should you choose to drop in for a snack or a hearty country lunch!
It was the opening of the campsite in 1994 which really signalled the start of the tourism industry in El Berro, and these days it is a popular base for those seeking adventure or active breaks on mountain bikes or quads or hiking along the many paths and tracks in the Regional Park of Sierra Espuña. Hang-gliding and rock climbing are other popular activities, but for many visitors the real attraction is seeing the “other side” of the Region of Murcia and experiencing the charm of a village where mains electricity did not arrive until the winter of 1956-57!
Registration for the tour is indispensable and can be completed through the tourist office of Alhama (telephone 968 633512, email turismo@alhamademurcia.es).
Note: the same tour is being held IN ENGLISH on the previous day – go to the What’s On section of Alhama Today for further details.
For more local news, events and visiting information contact the tourist office (telephone 968 633512) or go to the home page of Alhama Today.
