No need to worry: V-16 emergency beacons are safe despite fears of overheating
Drivers in Spain must carry the new lights next year but fears grow over overheating and battery explosions

In less than three months, drivers across Spain will be required to carry a V-16 warning light in their cars as part of the new DGT 3.0 safety rules. The lights are designed to replace the old warning triangles and make breakdowns on the hard shoulder safer, but some drivers and car experts are already worried about the potential risks.
The V-16 beacons are powered by batteries, usually rechargeable lithium or AA batteries. That has sparked concerns that the lights could overheat, especially in cars left baking in the sun.
Experts warn that leaving the V-16 in the wrong place, like the dashboard or passenger seats, could push temperatures past 50ºC, increasing the small but real risk of a battery explosion.
The good news is that the DGT has put safety measures in place. Every approved V-16 beacon must pass strict tests to withstand temperatures between -10ºC and 50ºC. That means if the light is stored correctly, such as in the glove compartment, overheating is highly unlikely.
With this in mind, the DGT has said the probability of an approved beacon exploding is minimal, but drivers are being urged to follow storage guidelines to stay safe.
Aside from safety concerns, the V-16 lights have strict technical requirements. They must be geolocated and compatible with DGT 3.0, at least 12 years old, and the retail price must include this feature. When activated during an emergency, the light must be visible in all directions for at least 30 minutes and cover a one-kilometre radius.
From 2026, failing to display a V-16 light when stopping on the hard shoulder could cost drivers up to €80, the same fine as not using traditional warning triangles.
Even though the law doesn’t kick in until next year, drivers can already use V-16 lights, and experts predict a last-minute rush as the deadline approaches.
For those looking to get ahead, TJ Electricals Euronics in Camposol is selling DGT-approved FlashLED SOS geolocated beacons for just €49.90. The shop is in Centro Comercial B and while you’re there, you can also check out their range of electronics and home essentials.
