New niño on the block: Action supermarkets sweep Spain to rival the big brands
The bargain Dutch brand is threatening the crowns of Mercadona, Lidl and Aldi with low, low prices

It seems there’s no stopping Action, the latest discount superstore aiming for Spanish domination. The Dutch chain first arrived in Spain in 2022 and already has close to 100 stores across the country.
Known for its rock-bottom prices, the brand is pushing ahead with its expansion by opening three new branches, the latest in Málaga, after recent launches in Morón and Ciudad Real.
Action’s success has been huge. Across its 3,000 stores in 14 European countries, the company attracts around 20 million customers each week and employs more than 65,000 people.
In Spain, Action is seen as a challenger to the big names like Mercadona, Carrefour, Aldi and Lidl. It isn’t a traditional supermarket though. Most of its products are non-food items, although you will find a few basics such as sweets, coffee and seasonal treats.
Prices are famously low, with plenty of things costing less than €2.
The chain also keeps shoppers coming back by adding around 150 new products every week. The mix covers everything from cookware and towels to fashion, gadgets, stationery, cleaning products, personal care, gifts, toys and gardening tools. There’s even a pet section and a growing range of home and DIY supplies.
How many stores are there in Spain?
Action is continuing to grow and plans to open another 20 stores in Spain soon. Since its first Spanish shop opened in Girona in 2022, you can now find Action stores in the following communities:
• Galicia – 3 stores
• Asturias – 1 store
• Cantabria – 1 store
• Castilla y León – 2 stores
• Navarra – 1 store
• Aragon – 4 stores
• Catalonia – 20 stores
• Valencian Community – 16 stores
• Murcia – 7 stores
• Andalucía – 17 stores
• Castilla-La Mancha – 5 stores
• Extremadura – 1 store
• Madrid – 11 stores
The company has also opened its first logistics centre in Illescas, Toledo, which will supply up to 210 stores across Spain and Portugal.
Salaries and jobs at Action
With so many new stores opening, Action’s expansion also means plenty of new job opportunities. According to French media outlet Herloop, one Action employee in France said they earned €1,747 gross per month for a full-time position.
What stands out about the company is its approach to pay. Action applies the same national salary structure wherever it operates, so wages do not depend on the country but on your job role and level of responsibility. Based on available figures, salaries range roughly between €1,198 and €2,757 before bonuses.
