New free car park opens in Santiago de la Ribera
San Javier Town Council has already opened 174 parking spaces, with more on the way
The San Javier Town Council has just opened a new free car park in Santiago de la Ribera with 174 spaces. Located on Calle Coronel López Peña, this much-needed parking lot will be joined by an additional 253 spaces in the near future.
It was all made possible thanks to the Ministry of Defence, who agreed to move back the wall of the General Air Academy. This will be the central point of the upcoming International Air Festival which is expected to draw thousands of spectators, so the extra space has come at a very good time.
At the opening of the new car park, Mayor José Miguel Luengo thanked Colonel Luis Felipe González Asenjo of the Air Academy for the continued cooperation, calling the parking lot “a response to the lack of parking in the urban area of Santiago de la Ribera.”
He added that once all phases are complete, a total of 467 new spaces will have been created.
Built on a 5,900-square-metre area transferred by the Ministry, the €1.9 million lot features a modern, eco-friendly design: permeable paving to recycle rainwater, reflective surfaces to reduce heat and a pergola with solar panels that power electric vehicle chargers and LED lighting.
At the end of the car park, a roundabout has been built to avoid any traffic jams where Calle Corornel López Peña meets the old airport road.
Colonel González Asenjo reaffirmed the AGA’s support, saying, “as it has always been,” the academy will work “for the benefit of all the residents of the municipality.”
He also confirmed that work will soon begin on a new Aeronautical Cultural Center next to the promenade, which will be dedicated to the famed Patrulla Águila pilots and is expected to become a major tourist attraction.
