Consum is set to open a new supermarket in Alhama de Murcia, with more than 1,000 square metres of sales space and an expected 30 new jobs for the local area, according to sources familiar with the project.

 

The store will be built on a plot between avenida Ginés Campos and calle Totana, close to one of the main entrances into the town centre, on a site previously occupied by another supermarket. The project already has a building permit in place, clearing the way for construction and setting up of the new store to get under way.

 

Back on April 16, the mayor of Alhama de Murcia, Ms Sánchez, and the councillor for Urban Planning, Mr Caja, met with representatives from Consum to go over the details of the project and discuss the steps needed to bring it to the municipality.

 

Once open, the supermarket is expected to bring a well-known commercial spot back into use, give residents more choice when it comes to shopping locally, and create fresh economic activity and jobs in the town.

 

"The arrival of Consum represents a significant investment for Alhama," explained Mr Caja.

 

"It will allow us to revitalise this area and create new job opportunities. The establishment of leading companies demonstrates the potential of our municipality and its ability to attract projects that contribute to its development."

 

Consum already has a strong presence in the Region, running 53 supermarkets across Murcia, made up of 33 company-owned stores and 20 Charter franchises. By the end of 2025, the cooperative employed 2,076 people across the Region.

 

Last year alone, Consum spent €245 million buying from suppliers based in Murcia. The company also runs its Regional Integration Platform in Las Torres de Cotillas, which was the cooperative's first logistics site to achieve a neutral CO₂ emissions balance.

 

The Alhama de Murcia council says it will continue working through the necessary administrative steps to keep the project moving forward in line with local planning rules.
