The Town Council is committed to spending on public services for residents
Alhama de Murcia Town Council has unveiled a series of significant infrastructure projects aimed at enhancing the quality of life for its residents and modernising the municipality. With a strong focus on public services and community facilities, these investments are set to bring substantial improvements before the end of the year.
New bus services
One of the key initiatives is the expansion of the bus service to the Arrixaca hospital, which will now include new routes connecting Condado de Alhama, the Industrial Estate and the lower pedanías (outlying districts) with the town centre.
This development addresses a long-standing need for better public transport options in these areas, making it easier for residents to access essential services and the town centre.
Swimming pool renovations
The municipal summer swimming pools are set for a major overhaul, with an investment of 72,000 euros allocated for their complete remodelling. This project will see the repair of the two existing pools, as well as the creation of a new children’s play area featuring slides and other recreational activities.
Additionally, the ‘beach’ and rest area will be renovated, transforming the facility into a family-friendly space accessible to all residents. These upgrades will provide a refreshed and inviting environment for both leisure and exercise during the summer months.
Citizen’s advice centre and health centre
Further investments include the renovation of the citizen attention office, with 60,000 euros allocated to improve the space acquired last year. These improvements are designed to provide a more efficient and comfortable service to residents, streamlining interactions between the public and the Town Council.
In a significant boost to healthcare services, the Regional Ministry of Health is planning the construction of a new health centre in Alhama de Murcia. This ambitious project, requiring a 4.5-million-euro investment, will more than double the space of the current facility and add 17 consulting rooms.
The new centre will be built in two phases: first, the demolition of the existing attached building, followed by the construction of a modern facility with three floors and a basement. Not only that, but the town will also see an increase in the number of healthcare staff, including two new family doctors, a paediatrician, three nurses, a physiotherapist and a midwife as part of the 2023-2026 Primary Care Improvement Strategy.
Castle rehabilitation project
The rehabilitation of the Castle of Alhama de Murcia is another priority, with the regional government providing a 50,000-euro grant to support the project. This initiative aims to protect and restore the historical landmark, ensuring its preservation for future generations and enhancing its value as a cultural and tourist attraction.
Land and compensation payments
The Town Council is also addressing long-pending financial obligations, including the payment of 140,000 euros for essential land required for rainwater reservoir management. Additionally, 48,400 euros will be paid to regularise the acquisition of roads, ensuring these issues are finally resolved.
Alhama de Murcia’s mayor, María Cánovas, has emphasised the Council’s commitment to using funds effectively to enhance municipal services and improve the quality of life for all residents.
“We have been working to ensure that these funds are used as effectively as possible,” she stated, highlighting the importance of these investments in fostering a better living environment for the community.
With these projects, Alhama de Murcia is poised to make significant strides in improving its infrastructure and public services, ensuring that the town remains a vibrant and welcoming place for all its inhabitants.
