Nearly 40 beaches, museums and walking routes across Murcia to become more accessible
More than €1 million will be invested to improve access to some of the most important cultural, historic and natural sites across the region

Winter in the Region of Murcia is a great time to get out and about. The weather is perfect for walking and hiking, with cooler temperatures but still plenty of warmth when the sun is out. It’s a good time of year to check out some of the region’s historical and cultural sites without the intense summer heat. And quite a few of these sites are about to get more accessible.
More than €1 million is being invested to improve accessibility across almost 40 tourism spaces in the Region of Murcia. The investments will cover everything from natural walking routes and beaches to museums, auditoriums and historic landmarks.
In total, 39 municipalities will benefit from the funding, which has been awarded through grants from the Regional Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Sports as part of its 2025 programme. Each local council could apply for funding for one project, up to a maximum of €30,000. There was strong interest, with 42 municipalities applying, and almost the full €1.1 million budget has now been used.
One of the highest-rated projects is the improvement of accessibility along the Las Norias route in Abarán. It’s a four-kilometre riverside walk that follows the River Segura and passes a series of historic 19th-century water wheels, some of which are still in use today supporting local agriculture.

Elsewhere, the funding has been awarded for a new lift at the Archaeological Museum of Cehegín, accessibility upgrades at the Fuente Álamo auditorium, and improvements to accessible beach areas in Los Alcázares and San Javier. There are also plans to improve promenades and viewpoints in Águilas, repair river bathing platforms in Blanca that were damaged in past flooding, and upgrade accessibility at the Fortuna thermal baths.
Murcia city and Cartagena are both included, with funding going towards accessibility improvements at the Fortresses of Rey Lobo in Monteagudo and the Roman amphitheatre in Cartagena.
