The Guardia Civil has arrested a 43-year-old man in Torrevieja who was wanted by the German authorities over an alleged homicide and assault causing serious injury. The man, a Romanian national, was also carrying a forged identity document in an apparent attempt to hide his true identity.

 

According to the Guardia Civil, officers from the Torrevieja Main Station were carrying out routine public safety duties in a residential part of the town when they noticed the man behaving evasively and trying to avoid them. This prompted them to ask for his identification.

 

The document he handed over immediately raised suspicions and after checking it more closely, officers found signs it had been forged. It was seized and the man was taken to police headquarters, where investigators were able to establish his real identity and uncover several outstanding legal claims against him.

 

The most serious of these was a European Arrest Warrant issued by German authorities over his alleged involvement in a case of voluntary manslaughter, involving assault and serious bodily harm. The Guardia Civil confirmed the warrant through international police cooperation channels. Officers also found two further outstanding court orders against him, issued by a court in Almería.

 

He was arrested on suspicion of document forgery as well as under the European Arrest Warrant, and brought before the Investigating Section of the Torrevieja Court of First Instance, which was on duty at the time. The extradition request has since been passed to the Investigating Section of the Central Court of First Instance, part of the National Court, which will handle the process of sending him back to Germany.
