Murcia photo of the month January 2026
Here’s the top image of the month taken by the Los Alcázares Digital Camera Club (LADCC)
Firstly, a big thank to all the Murcia Today readers who took the time and trouble to vote last month on our ‘Photo of the Year’ competition. This gave readers the chance to review and see the club’s winning monthly photos from 2025.
LADCC opened 2026 by welcoming two new members to the club thereby keeping the membership at its highest level in several years. Sadly, we did lose a few members during the course of the past year, mainly due to other commitments, and their contribution to the Club will be greatly missed.
On the photographic side the club started off the year with its first competition by tackling the topic of “Open”. As the title suggests members had a free range with regard to subject matter. The entries were varied, with stunning photos covering a variety of themes such as animals, birds, people and street scenes. Indeed, animals and bird life were a popular choice as three out of the top four photo entries were this genre. There was also a photo depicting the recent floods in the Murcia region, and we even had a beautiful scenic shot from Norway which was judged a well-deserved third place!
This month club members were also testing out a revised scoring system with three categories instead of two. This slightly more time consuming, yet more specific, scoring system was judged to be a success by members and will be used for the rest of the year.
There were twenty-four great entries but Bob Gasston got off to a ‘flying’ start by managing to capture a beautiful flamingo in full flight. Bob informed members that his intention was to try and capture the infrequently seen under-wing colours of these beautiful birds. Although flamingoes can look rather gangly in flight, his photo manages to capture the beautiful white, pink and underwing black flight feathers of this distinctive bird. It is often difficult for photographers to capture bird movement in such clarity but with a lot of patience, and by learning some of the skills offered by fellow members, Bob’s photo seemed to appeal to the group. The picture was taken at Las Salinas in San Pedro del Pinatar and any visitors to the area should visit as there are lovely walks and a wide variety of bird life to see.

Unfortunately, this month’s outing had to be cancelled due to bad weather, which is an unusual occurrence! The club’s photographers are however already working towards this month’s topic of ‘Old and New’ which has been given a very specific brief. This will certainly test and focus the minds of club members, and it will be interesting to see how the topic title is interpreted.
This popular club usually meets twice a month, at the Las Claras Centre in Los Alcázares, on the first Tuesday of every month and, often, an outing towards the end of the month, where the group gets together to collectively work on the topic for the monthly competition. With modern day technology we can all keep in contact for training sessions, sharing knowledge etc via ‘group chats’. We are interested in hearing from anyone who would like to join us when the opportunity arises. You will be put on a waiting list and be contacted when a space becomes available. If you would like more information about the Club please do not hesitate to look at our website,
