Murcia proposes giving Asian coffee and meat pie official tourist status
One Region of Murcia party is strongly against the move, calling it “a load of nonsense”

Asian coffee from Cartagena and Murcia’s famous meat pie could soon be officially recognised as tourist attractions under a new regional law.
The Regional Assembly has agreed to move forward with draft legislation that would create a special “Tourist Interest Asset” seal, designed to highlight and protect some of the Region of Murcia’s best-known traditions, dishes and events.
The proposal was approved to begin its parliamentary process, with support from most parties. Only Podemos voted against it, with its spokesperson dismissing the idea as “a load of nonsense”.
So what would it actually do?
The new seal would apply not just to physical places, but also to events, food, cultural traditions and routes that help define the Region’s identity. That means well-known favourites such as Cartagena’s Asian coffee and Murcia’s pastel de carne could qualify, alongside celebrations and experiences.
Other examples mentioned as potential candidates include the Camino de la Cruz de Caravaca pilgrimage route, Cieza’s annual peach blossom season, Lorca’s crespillos pastries and the ever-popular marinera tapa.
To qualify, a product, event or tradition would need to be at least 10 years old, have continuity over time and show it has real appeal beyond its immediate area. It would also need to promote a positive image of the Region and stand out for its originality.
Supporters say the idea is to better showcase what makes the Region of Murcia unique and to help promote attractions all year round, rather than relying too heavily on peak-season tourism.
Not everyone is convinced. Podemos described the proposal as “utter nonsense” and argued that the focus should instead be on protecting historic buildings and heritage sites that are in need of restoration.
For now, the draft law moves into the amendment stage, where changes can be proposed before it returns for final approval. If it goes through, don’t be surprised to see your favourite local coffee, pastry or fiesta sporting an official tourist seal in the future.
