Mayor of Águilas Mari Carmen Moreno resigns
Mari Carmen Moreno announces her resignation from the mayor's office and puts an end to her life in active politics

After 24 years dedicated to public life and politics, ten of them as a councillor in Águilas, Mayor Mari Carmen Moreno, announced her resignation on Tuesday August 19. This, she said, puts an “end” to her life in active politics after “deep and thoughtful reflection.”
In an emotional press conference, Ms Moreno stressed that she has made this “difficult decision solely for personal reasons.”
Taking stock of these past years, the head of the local council assured that “having won the elections on three consecutive occasions and having been the first female mayor of this wonderful town has been and will be what I am most proud of. That the citizens of this town have given me the opportunity to represent Águilas wherever I have gone has been a great honor for me.”
Ms Moreno has added that “being mayor has meant much more to me than having a political position. For me, being mayor has meant having the great luck of crossing paths with so many locals who have given me so much love, that I will never have the time to thank them all.”
During her meeting with the media, she had words of gratitude for her family, with whom “it is time to start a new life, joining my job as a Biology and Geology teacher at an institute in the Region.”
Also for “almost all the officials of this house, with whom we have worked hard and well; sometimes going through difficult times that we have tried to overcome with unity and strength. To the cleaners of this building in which I have spent so many hours. To all the associations for their always affection and for having allowed me to be part of their lives. To the media, for their treatment, closeness and trust and for being the voice and loudspeaker of our town.”
She has firmly promised that her departure does not mean the end “of the project that we started more than ten years ago; that project continues with the same strength and enthusiasm but with another captain at the helm.”
She concluded with an emotional quote: “Knowing how to leave, sometimes, is as important as knowing how to arrive. I know that the time has come to prioritise family and health, which is without a doubt the most important thing in life. I leave as I came, but, yes, I take with me the most important thing, the heart full of the affection of so many people whom I have never I will forget.”
