May 2 and 3 Free guided tours in Spanish of the Los Mayos fiestas in Alhama
See the sights and learn the local history of the main annual fiestas in Alhama de Murcia
The time of year has come when the town of Alhama de Murcia celebrates the arrival of spring with its annual Los Mayos fiestas, a couple of weeks of traditional fun and processions, music, markets, and general jollity which, despite their apparent lack of seriousness in some aspects, have been awarded National Tourist Interest status.
This year the local tourist board is holding a series of guided visits (in Spanish) over the main weekend of the Mayos, when papier mâché tableaux adorn the streets and the colourful Corremayos parades take place, taking visitors (and locals!) on a tour around the town centre. Along the way information is given about the history of both the town and the fiestas and insights are given into the local identity which is expressed in the May celebrations.
The tours take place on Saturday 2nd May at 18.00 and 19.30 and on Sunday 3rd May at 10.00, 12.00 and 13.30, and are completely free of charge although prior booking is required online here for 2nd May and here for 3rd May.
NOTE: THE SAME TOURS ARE BEING HELD IN ENGLISH ON THE SAME DAYS, as 18.00 on Saturday and at 10.00 and 17.00 on Sunday. Click here for further details.
Alternatively, contact the local tourist office on 968 633512 or by email at turismo@alhamademurcia.es.
For more local events, news and visiting information contact the tourist office (telephone 968 633512) or go to the home page of Alhama Today.
