Beaches around the Mar Menor are being prepared at full speed ahead of the Easter holidays, although recent storms have made the job far from straightforward.

 

Heavy rain and strong winds have battered parts of the coast in recent weeks, leaving municipal teams working against the clock to get everything ready for visitors. Across much of the shoreline, crews are spreading sand that was dredged earlier this year so that the first beachgoers of the season arrive to clean and usable stretches.

 

In some areas like San Javier, piles of sand are being left in place for now to avoid it being washed away again if more unsettled weather arrives in April.

 

While the biggest upgrades are planned for summer, a number of improvements are already being brought forward. In San Pedro del Pinatar, new wooden walkways are being installed at the popular mud baths. Local councillor Javier Castejón explained they were replaced due to their poor condition and the need for better accessibility. Changing cabins are also set to be added so visitors can get changed more comfortably after their mud baths.

 

Elsewhere, work is ongoing in the Las Salinas Regional Park, where sand fences have been installed and invasive plants cleared. Protective barriers are also due to be placed along sensitive dune areas such as La Llana to help prevent further erosion.

 

Visitors this Easter will also notice upgrades to facilities and access. New tourist information signs are expected to be in place, along with improved parking for people with reduced mobility in areas such as La Puntica, Villananitos and El Mojón. Plans are also in place to introduce bike repair stations and solar charging points along parts of the promenade in April.

 

Further along the coast, work continues in Los Alcázares, where seafront lighting is being upgraded and a new cycle lane is taking shape. The town is also preparing for the 25th anniversary of its popular Berber Pirate Raids event, with beaches being topped up with sand.

 

Despite the delays caused by the weather, local authorities are confident the coastline will be ready in time for Easter, with most beach bars and facilities expected to be open for the holiday period.
