Mar Menor Golf Resort Golf Course
The Mar Menor Resort Golf Course is an 18 hole, 72 par course
This is the oldest of the six “Nicklaus Trail” courses in the Region of Murcia, and is also known as “The Original Course”. The first nine holes were built to a Dave Thomas design and opened in 2005, but the adapted and extended 18-hole par 72 course, which measures 6,153 metres (6,729 yards), was overseen by Nicklaus Design.
It’s not a long course, but with the maturity of the native grasses, flowering shrubs and palm trees, and the addition of a new lake which comes into play on three holes, accuracy and course management skills are required.
The elevated green on the par 3 second hole quickly gives a taste of the additional protection this course has: a tee shot anywhere other than the centre of the green can mean playing further tricky shots from fringes or the bunker at the front left of the green.
The long par 4 third is a slight dogleg right, stroke index 1. A straight long tee shot is required to set up the option of another long shot over the lake to the right of the fairway or a lay-up to take on the pin with a short iron.
The par 4 18th brings you home to the Intercontinental Hotel and the club bar. A fairly wide fairway is guarded down the right and in front of the green by bunkers. The shot to the green needs to be long enough to clear these hazards but don’t be too conservative with club selection as there is out of bounds beyond the green.
The whole course is painstakingly and beautifully maintained: even the tee areas and the rough would put many British courses to shame!
Other golf facilities include a driving range with putting and chipping green and a clubhouse, complete with bar, al fresco area, changing rooms, locker/storage, showers, sauna and a pro shop which is open all day every day.
Reservations can be made on +34 968 041 765.
Making your way to the course could hardly be easier. If you enter from the south-west entrance to the development, simply go straight on at the first roundabout and you will soon arrive at the resort centre and the hotel. The golf shop and facilities are on the bottom floor of the hotel, best approached from the side not facing the road.
If you use the eastern gate to enter the resort, simply drive straight on for approximately 400 yards and once again you can’t miss the resort centre and hotel.
