Los Alcázares moves closer to new elderly care home
140-bed residence on track for 2027 after council approves next steps
Great news for many older residents in Los Alcázares. The Ayuntamiento's Local Governing Board has given the green light to process plans for a new senior citizens' residence, tackling a pressing need for local elderly care. Over 5,100 residents are aged over 60, making up 24% of the population, yet places are scarce with long waiting lists in both public and private options. The project builds on an existing concrete structure on a municipal plot at Isla Columbretes street. It will provide around 140 beds, run by an external firm under concession, with modern, person-centred care.
Mayor Mario Pérez Cervera sees it as hugely positive progress. "Today we are taking a fundamental step towards our municipality finally having a senior citizens' residence, a necessary service that many residents have been forced to seek outside of Los Alcázares," he said.
This follows on from the new Day Centre, which is now up from 10 to 40 places thanks to an €800,000 investment. Pérez Cervera stressed the human side. "Our seniors deserve the best care and services after all they have contributed to this municipality and their families." The timeline aims for awarding the concession in 2026 and opening in 2027, letting more elderly folks stay close to home and loved ones.
The project, started in 2024, has received positive technical reports. "Public services, and especially those for the elderly, are an absolute priority for Los Alcázares," Pérez Cervera concluded. With Spain's ageing population growing, local solutions like this make all the difference.
