Lorca hotels expecting a bumper August
The “main cultural and heritage destination in the Region of Murcia” is expecting hotel occupancy rates of over 80%
It is, of course, usual for hotels in the Region of Murcia to enjoy a couple of months of bumper business during July and August, when tourist flock to the beaches of the Costa Cálida from Madrid, northern Spain and all over Europe, but his year it is forecast that those in the major cities of Murcia, Cartagena and Lorca will also be reporting very encouraging results.
Following an unusually positive month of July, the expectation is that the city of Lorca in particular will continue to perform far better than has become usual for this time of year. The minister for the Economy in the regional government of Murcia, Marisa López Aragón, this week described Lorca as “the main cultural and heritage destination in the Region”, revealing that the forecast for the tourist accommodation sector in August is for occupancy rates of 92 per cent for hotels on the coast, 93 per cent in rural accommodation and 90 per cent in campsites.
At the same time, the corresponding figures for the major cities are 82 per cent in Lorca hotels, 75 per cent in Cartagena and 65 per cent in Murcia, although late bookings may yet raise these figures still higher.
In July, the city of Murcia recorded its highest ever figure for the month, climbing to 73 per cent from the 61 per cent recorded in July 2025, while Cartagena, boosted by the Rock Imperium and La Mar de Música festivals, reached 80 per cent (six points higher than last year).
The other most important figures during last month were occupancy rates of 85 per cent in coastal hotels, 83 per cent in rural accommodation and 76 per cent in campsites.
