Jumilla joins new network of historic town centres in the Region of Murcia

The aim is to continue preserving and making the most of the historical heritage of the old centre of Jumilla

The Town Hall of Jumilla is proud to have become one of the founder members of a new network entitled the Red de Municipios con Casco Histórico de la Región de Murcia (municipalities with historical old town centres in the Region of Murcia), along with 8 others, with the aim of making the most of the architectural and historical heritage of the localities concerned.

The first meeting of the new group took place on 17th October at the Palacio Guevara and the Huerto Ruano in Lorca, where representatives of the 9 Town Halls signed the founding documents of the network, committing making a commitment to prevent the degradation of old cities and to promote them as elements which contribute to the vultural and economic health of the municipalities. Representing Jumilla were Mayoress Seve González and Councillor Asunción Navarro, reiterating that the old centre of Jumilla was declared a historic complex in 1981 and that they hope to share strategies and experience with others to develop new projects in the future.

This collaboration, it is anticipated, will take the form of technical studies and actions which promote tourism and sustainability in collaboration with other members of the network.

The other members signing up to the network this month were Lorca, Beniel, Aledo, Caravaca de la Cruz, Murcia, Cartagena, Cehegín and Mula, with the hosts showing off some of the refurbishments which have been carried out in the city in recent years. It is hope that Ojós will be the next to join, as the small town in the Ricote valley awaits the declaration of its centre as an Item of Cultural Interest.
