Jumilla continues to invest in sustainable tourism

Improvements to hiking and cycling routes, the botanical garden and the 1700-year-old Roman mausoleum of El Casón are among the projects undertaken by Jumilla Town Hall

The Town Hall of Jumilla continues to implement its Sustainable Tourist Destination plan and has already completed 80 per cent of the work planned, investing 2.4 million euros in a series of 15 projects in and around the town centre.

Some of these projects involve urban infrastructures such as street lighting and general energy efficiency, while others are aimed at regenerating the green areas of the town, such as the Víctimas del Terrorismo and the botanical garden of La Estacada. At the same time pavements have been widened and children’s play areas created.

But from a tourism point of view, the most eye-catching improvements have involved the eco-tourism route of the old Cañada Real transhumance route, parking areas for camper vans and motor homes, hiking and cycling routes in the mountains of Santa Ana and El Carche and at the Fuente de las Perdices, the development of the Hoya de la Sima site which contains footprints of prehistoric animals and the improvements around El Casón. This is a 1700-year-old Roman mausoleum, a small structure but the oldest in the Region of Murcia which survives fully intact!
