Important changes to Spain's IRPF income tax returns for 2025
The tax authority in Spain is making key changes this year to facilitate compliance with tax obligations

These modifications aim to streamline the process of filing the Impuesto sobre la Renta de las Personas Físicas, the Spanish equivalent of income tax, to make it easier for taxpayers to fulfil their fiscal responsibilities.
The most notable change is the earlier start of the campaign. Taxpayers will be able to submit their 2024 tax returns starting from Wednesday April 2, 2025.
This adjustment brings the process forward significantly compared to previous years, allowing individuals to begin filing before Easter.
- Online: From April 2 to June 30, 2025
- By phone: From May 6 to June 30, 2025 (with appointment requests starting on April 29)
- In-person at tax offices: From June 2 to June 30, 2025 (with appointment requests starting on May 29)
For tax returns with a payment result requiring direct debit, the final submission date will be June 25, 2025.
Additional changes to 2025 tax returns in Spain
In addition to the revised deadlines, the Tax Agency has introduced several other significant updates:
- Monitoring high-value card payments: Issuing entities must declare transactions exceeding €25,000 annually per card
- Increased limit for multiple payers: The threshold rises from €1,500 to €2,500, benefiting workers with temporary contracts or multiple jobs
- Mandatory tax filing for unemployed individuals: All recipients of unemployment benefits will now be required to submit a tax return, regardless of their income level
- Extended reduction for employment income: The deduction limit increases to €7,302
- New payment methods: Bizum has been added as a payment option for making additional tax contributions, alongside bank transfers and credit cards
