A man walking his dog along Playa d’en Bossa in Ibiza on Friday October 10 made a gruesome discovery when he spotted a human foot half-buried in the sand. The find came just days after heavy storms battered the Balearic Islands washing debris, and possibly much more, onto the coast.

 

The man raised the alarm at around 8am, prompting Policía Nacional patrols and forensic experts to rush to the scene and cordon off the area. Witnesses, including hotel guests and locals heading to a nearby gym, looked on as police secured the limb to prevent it being swept away by the waves while samples were collected for forensic testing.

 

Authorities are investigating the origin of the remains and say the foot could have been carried in from elsewhere by the rough sea. DNA analysis will be compared against the national missing persons database in an effort to identify who it belonged to.

 

Speculation has grown that the limb may be linked to one of the many migrant crossings to the Balearics. This year alone, nearly fifty bodies have been recovered on the islands, including five migrants found bound hand and foot and another case in Palma where remains were found reduced to a skeleton.

 

Just hours before the discovery in Ibiza, police in Valencia confirmed another grim case, a headless body in an advanced state of decomposition had been found on the sand at Dosel beach in Cullera. The Guardia civil has launched an investigation to determine the victim’s identity.

 

Both incidents have generated shock and speculation. Police continue their work to uncover the truth behind the macabre findings. With rough seas still sweeping Spain’s coastline, officials are keeping all possibilities open, urging calm as forensic teams work to connect the latest findings with the growing list of tragic cases at sea.
